An argument between the couple had become heated after the wife declined to do household chores as she was not feeling well. She had given birth to a baby boy 90 days earlier.
“She had not been working for long that day when I asked her to do some work, and she challenged me to finish her off if I was going to keep bothering her,” said Sudip. “I then lost my temper and squeezed her neck with a cloth, and she soon breathed her last,” Police Inspector Sujankumar Rajbhandari quoted Sudip as saying.
Sudip then hung the body from the ceiling to make it look like a suicide. “However, there were clear signs that the woman was murdered,” said Rajbhandari. “The body was badly injured and her feet were touching the floor. The cloth used to hang her was not tight enough at the neck,” he added.
Police suspicions were further aroused by the statements of neighbors. “Villagers told us that Sudip and his family used to torture Sharmila every now and then. She was lean and weak and, moreover, it was her first baby after suffering several miscarriages,” Rajbhandari added.
Sharmila had stayed at her parental home for two months for post delivery care before she came back to her house. Claiming that it was deliberate murder, Sharmila´s parents have filed a case against Sudip, his brother and mother.
The case is under investigation and the three members of the family are in police custody. “Even though Sudip has confessed the crime, the mother-in-law and brother-in-law claim that they were totally unaware about the incident,” Rajbhandari said.
