Tomatoes and potatoes have become dearer by Rs 2 to Rs 6 per kg, while seasonal vegetables like green peas, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, onion green and local cauli among others have seen price rise of Rs 4 to Rs 10 per kg.[break]
According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board, the price of major vegetables has increase because their production season is approaching an end. “Decline in supplies to the market is the major reason behind price hike.
Daily supplies at the Kalimati market at present hovers around 550 tons, down from normal daily supply of around 700 tons,” Bimala Luitel, a vegetable wholesaler, told Republica.
Local cauli has become costlier by Rs 4 per kg and is currently selling for Rs 28 per kg, while price of tomato has increased to Rs 21 per kg from last week´s Rs 15 per kg. Likewise, price of white potato has increased to Rs 18 per kg from last week´s Rs 12 per kg and cabbage is selling for Rs 18 per kg, up from Rs 14 per kg of last week.
Similarly, prices of red and white radish have increased by Rs 3 per kg each, making it Rs 25 and Rs 12 per kg respectively. Nepali garlic is selling at higher price of Rs 67 per kg, while the price of onion has increased to Rs 25 per kg, from last week´s Rs 20 per kg.
Sanu Shrestha, a farmer of leafy vegetables, said vegetables prices are increasing as farms across the country are entering lean production season.
Prices of bottle gourd, ginger, Chinese garlic and green onion, however, have remained unchanged.
