Unregistered drugs seized

KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The government has confiscated 16 unregistered drugs including injections, abortion drugs, emergency contraceptives and some Sildenafil citrate (aphrodisiac) based medicines, being sold at pharmacies operating near renowned hospitals in the capital.



It is illegal to produce, market, distribute, export-import, store and use unregistered drugs. The Department of Drug Administration (DDA) seized the drugs during raids this week. [break]



The DDA confiscated the drugs from pharmacies operating near Bir Hospital, Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maternity Hospital, Kathmandu Nursing Home, Kantipur Hospital and Everest Nursing Home.



According to DDA some medicine were confiscated from pharmacies operating on the hospital premises.



The drugs which the DDA impounded include Red Pam and Toxi Pam injections which may cause multiple adverse effects like drowsiness, dizziness, disturbance in vision, nausea, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat), headache, hyperventilation and muscular weakness in the user.



Doctors warn that large doses of such injection may cause transient neuromuscular blockade.



Acivir IV injection which was among those seized is used to treat fungal cases.



Azipen, Azicor, Ze-Clox-L, Oflokem 200 and unregistered antibiotics were also found selling in the market.



Similarly Quriderm, Mycet,Cetramac, worm care and Relief Gel were also seized by DDA. Relief Gel is a painkiller. Mycet and Cetramac are used to treat to allergy.



DDA Drug inspectors have also found Penegra, Vistragra-100,DX-100 and Vegra being sold in the market. "To sell these drugs, doctor´s prescription is needed," Shyam Kumar Adhikari, a DDA drugs inspector said.



IPL-72,EPL-72, Unwanted-72 emergency contraceptives were also impounded from the pharmacies.



Adhikari also revealed that DDA inspectors have also found original drugs along with their fake versions. "Due to porous border unregistered drugs are being smuggled into the country,” Adhikari said.
