Unknown disease claims one; dozens fall ill

UDAYAPUR, July 15: A child has died and dozens of others have taken ill to an unknown disease that spread in the remote Fedi VDC of northern Khotang a week ago. Four-year-old Mitra Prasad Tamang died of the disease on Sunday, locals said.



The patients are said to fall unconscious a few hours after contracting the disease. Other symptoms of the disease include headache, fever, nausea and stomachache. [break]



The patients have been brought to the district hospital in Diktel for treatment after the local health centers failed to diagnose the disease, Diktel Hospital said. Two persons are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.



They learnt about the disease only recently though it was seen a week ago and has already claimed a life, Dr Ombiju Panta at the hospital said.



The District Health Office sent a team of three health workers led by Assistant Health Worker Ram Kumar Sah with medicines to the village on Thursday morning after the disease could not brought under control. A team of health workers from Area Health Office Baksila has also left for the site.



Doctors say the disease could be bacillary dysentery but it can be confirmed only after the teams reach the village. The village is a day and half´s walk from Diktel.
