KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Claiming that the government has ignored it demands, time and again, the Film Development Board (FDB) have gone on an indefinite strike from Wednesday. Nawal Khadka, Chairman of Nepal Cine Artists Association said, “If the government does not take any step by tomorrow then we will be taking measures.”

During the press meet held on Tuesday, actor Neer Shah said, “We need a suitable person on board. We’ve been asking for someone who understands the film industry instead of cadres from political parties. But we’ve only received empty promises from the Information and Communication Minister, Raj Kishor Yadav.”[break]

This is only one of the several demands of the Film Development Board. Among other demands, the board is asking to prioritize domestic films and, form and implement a Code of Conduct for the Censor Board.

Actor Rekha Thapa has offered her services to head the Film Development Board but Nawal Khadka, speaking on behalf of the board, has refused to take up the proposal, saying that the actor is not fit to take on the role. However, veteran actor Basundhara Bhusal says, “While I think she has the right to lobby for that position, I believe that since we are working together as an organization, someone with more maturity and experience should be appointed.”

She further went to add, “We are saddened by what is happening. We had to struggle to form the board 12 years ago and now to be in this situation is disheartening. For a sensitive issue like the Censor Board, we want someone who understands cinema not some political party member. Since we are not asking for something impossible, we hope this deadlock is soon corrected.
