UNESCO to award CRSC

KATHMANDU, March 10: United Nations Economic, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has decided to award Community Radio Support Center (CRSC) of Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists along with Kenya"s Arid Lands Information Network, with the UNESCO-IPDC prize for rural communication.



Established in 1985, the UNESCO award carries a purse of US $ 20, 000 and will be awarded to CRSC along with the Kenyan organization in Paris on Thursday, according to Raghu Mainali, coordinator of CRSC. [break]



According to UNESCO, the award recognizes a meritorious and innovative activity in improving communication in rural communities, especially in a developing country. The award is given every other year.



Mainali said that UNESCO is giving the award to CRSC for drafting ´Community Radio Performance System”. The World Association for Community Radio Broadcasters had nominated CRSC for the prize, stating that CRSC has contributed to making community radio transparent, sustainable and community-oriented.
