KATHMANDU, Sept 27: The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has hailed the adoption of new constitution in Nepal as a milestone in the peace process.

"Underlining that democratic transitions are complex and long-term processes, the Secretary-General commends the Nepali people on the adoption of the new constitution, a milestone in the peace process," read a statement issued by his spokesperson on Saturday. "He continues to stress the importance of non-violence and respect for peaceful protest."The statement said that Ban understands the decision by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to cancel his visit to the United Nations to focus on the domestic political situation and to facilitate dialogue. "He [Ban] looks forward to meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh to discuss a range of issues of mutual interests to Nepal and the United Nations," read the statement.

The Secretary-General also urged all to resolve differences in a spirit of compromise and in a flexible manner to pave way for a democratic, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous Nepal.

The Secretary-General's statement has lauded the adoption as "a milestone" even as the UN in its previous statement had just "acknowledged" the promulgation of new constitution.
