Speaking during a regular press briefing in New York, Secretary General Ban's Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Ban has urged both sides to engage in dialogue to resolve contentious issues in the new constitution draft. "I was asked about the situation in Nepal. What I can tell you is that the Secretary-General is following closely the situation in that country and is concerned about reports of violence in recent weeks and saddened by the loss of life in Nepal," said Dujarric responding to a question in the press conference.Dujarric said a new constitution is an important milestone of the UN supported and Nepal-led peace process. "The Secretary-General is hopeful that the leaders will share again a spirit of compromise. The UN office in Nepal is in regular contact with Nepali leaders and is urging them to seize this historic opportunity to agree on a dispensation that has the widest popular support," he further said.
The appeal of the UN Secretary General comes in wake of the general strikes enforced by the Tharu and Madhes-centric parties entering into 20th day on Thursday. Nearly two dozen protestors and police personnel have already lost lives in during the recent agitation over the delineation of the proposed federal provinces in the new constitution.
