UML Secretary Yubaraj Gyawali said that the meeting took the decision as the party leaders concluded that failure to hold polls in November would push the country into further uncertainty. [break]
“We decided to stand firm against any proposal for poll deferral because if we fail to hold the election on November 19 the situation will further worsen and it will be very difficult to conduct any polls thereafter,” Gyawali told Republica. He said it was the standing committee´s unanimous decision not to go for any “rethink” on the poll date.
According to him, the party would do its utmost to bring the agitating CPN-Maoist party on board the election process, but not at the cost of foregoing the November 19 poll date. “Maximum flexibility should be shown on the rest of the demands of the Mohan Baidya-led Maoist party. Every possible way should be explored to include them, but not at the cost of the poll date of November 19,” he added.
The meeting endorsed a plan of action prepared by the party secretariat with regard to the UML election campaign. “We have endorsed a plan titled ´CPN-UML at each and every doorstep´. The plan underscores a direct and personal touch between UML members and voters,” he said.
He said that the party has, this time, made some changes in the modus operandi of its election campaign. According to him, the party had focused more in the past on mobilizing party cadres and these in turn spent more time with party members. But this time they have instructed party members from the grassroots committees to reach out to more and more voters. “This time, we have clearly said that not a single family or voter should be left out. Everyone should be contacted even if the voter is sympathetic to some other political party,” he explained.
