According to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at TUTH, Alam´s respiratory system and heart were still functioning till this morning but he breathed his last at around 12:30 p.m. The bullet injury he sustained had led to brain death two days ago but because of lack of proper criteria in Nepal, doctors were not able to declare him dead as he was biologically still alive till today.
“Alam´s heartbeat had been slowing down until it stopped completely at 12:30 p.m. Doctors attending on him declared him dead in front of family members this afternoon," said Dr Subas Acharya, in-charge at the ICU.
Alam´s body was laid out for paying last tributes at the party head office at Balkhu for about an hour. The body of the late party central committee member was then taken to his home district for final rites. According to family sources, the funeral will take place on Friday.
Meanwhile, issuing a statement, party Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said the party has come to the conclusion that it is necessary to study seriously which force has been targeting prominent people in political and social life and why. He also urged the government to bring the assailants to book.
Though the government has intensified investigations into the shooting of Alam, who was also chairman of the Muslim Ittehad Organization, no headway has been made so far.
