UK envoy opens new leprosy hospital ward

KATHMANDU, Sept 3: British ambassador to Nepal John Rankin, on Thursday, inaugurated the new emergency building and female ward of Anandaban Hospital at Lalitpur. Anandaban Hospital is run by Leprosy Mission Nepal (TLMN).



During his visit to the hospital, ambassador Rankin appreciated the work of TLMN in fighting one of Nepal's enduring challenge--leprosy.

After being told that over 3,000 new leprosy cases are diagnosed every year in Nepal, Rankin said that all stakeholders should work together to control it. Rankin also expressed his commitment to contribute in every ways to combat leprosy in Nepal and reduce the stigma caused by the disease to affected people.


On the occasion, TLMN's Country Director Shovakhar Kandel thanked Britain for its continuous support to Nepal.


"The new inaugurated building is the result of the support from Britain," said Kandel. Officials said that the newly inaugurated 22-bed ward, originally built as a female department, is being used for earthquake patients recovering from surgeries at present.
