“We discussed whether or not the Madhes-based parties should field a common candidate. A decision to this effect will be taken by UDMF meeting on Wednesday afternoon,” Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta, co-chairman of MPRF, Nepal, told Republica.
According to him, UDMF will seriously follow political developments and each Madhes-based party will hold further discussion within the parties before reaching decision on PM candidacy.
Laxman Lal Karna, co-chairman of Sadbhawana Party, said MPRF-D Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar insisted that the Madhesi parties should file candidacy.
“We have every possibility to win. Nepali Congress and CPN-UML including fringe parties may also vote for our candidate,” Karna quoted Gachchhadar as saying to leaders.
Karna said Gachchhadar sees such possibility thinking that current coalition partners may support him.
Gupta further said, “If the UDMF decides not to file candidacy, it will consider forming a coalition with other parties,” adding, UDMF has not ruled out the possibility Madhes-based parties forming a coalition with the UCPN (Maoist).
Likewise, Jitendra Sonal, joint general-secretary of TMDP, said a decision to vote for other candidates will be taken only after finalizing a PM candidacy from the Madhes-based parties.
TMDP-N led by Mahendra Prasad Yadav was not present at the meeting. Earlier, at a function in the capital, Yadav had said UDMF will field a common PM candidate if three major political parties fail to reach consensus.
