SIRAHA, Oct 31: Cadres of the protesting United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have halted the vehicular movement of the locals at Thadi border-point of Siraha district by obstructing road with bamboos. They have prevented motorcycles with Nepali number plate to go across to the Indian side while Indian motorcycles are allowed to cross the border point back and forth.

Nepali motorcyclists are required by the protestors to abandon their motorcycles and cross the border on foot to buy goods of daily necessities from Laukaha city of India. Although the Nepalese commuters have been going through lots of hassles from the agitators, the border security personnel Armed Police Force (APF) and Indian Sima Suraksha Bal (SSB) have been watching the scene without any intervention. The cadres immediately stop any motorcycle with Nepalese number plate coming through Laukaha and drain out their petrol using plastic pipes. Petrol is then spilled on the road and set ablaze.

According to UDMF leader Bechan Yadav, who has been involved in the border-point blockade, their intentions are to prevent rampant black marketing of petrol through the border. "Our actions are intended to discourage those people smuggling fuels and selling them at high prices in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. We are strictly monitoring and preventing petroleum products from being smuggled inside the country," claimed Yadav.

"Protesters think every motorcyclist coming from Laukaha is smuggling fuel. Many people go there to buy goods of daily necessities. The actions of the protesters are absolutely unjustified," complained Niraj Yadav of Lahan. "While real smugglers are earning a lot through black marketing of petrol, innocent people like us are facing lots of unnecessary hassles."

Meanwhile, locals and cadres of the UDMF took a tractor (Ja 1 Ta 6185) under control and set it ablaze for smuggling petroleum products in Gauri Shankar area of Sarlahi district on Friday morning. The tractor was heading toward Lalbandi carrying around 300 liters of diesel and 100 liters of petrol in containers.

The UDMF cadres claimed they surrounded the tractor after being informed that it was smuggling petroleum products and weapons. The irate mob confiscated fuel and immediately set the tractor ablaze. "We confiscated 400 liters of fuel from the tractor. The mob also took control of three smugglers, including the tractor driver and attacked them," informed Ashok Singh of UDMF.

UDMF cadres claimed they have destroyed more than 1,000 liters of petrol and diesel which were being smuggled through Indian border using motorcycles and bicycles.

Earlier on Thursday, UDMF cadres had vandalized and set ablaze a motorcycle (Na 14 Pa 1498) in Shivasagar of Malangawa, the district headquarters of Sarlahi. Ashok Rai Yadav, the district chairman of United Socialist Forum (USF), said they burnt the motorcycle as it was defying their banda.
