KATHMANDU, Nov 21: Demanding inclusive appointments to the vacant posts in the Tribhuvan University (TU), the CPN-Maoist aligned National Professor Association (NPA) padlocked the office of vice chancellor (VC), rector and registrar on Wednesday.

NPA Chairman Jagdish Chandra Bhandari claimed that they were forced to take the move as top three officials of the university have been exercising monopoly in the appointment of faculty deans and assistant deans. [break]“The TU is a highly politicized institution and the major parties have long been exercising monopoly in the appointments of officials,” said Bhandari.

The TU executive board in October had appointed deans of six faculties. The post was vacant for several months due to differences between professors´ unions and associations.

NPA has also condemned the appointment of Chirik Shova Tamrakar as the dean of the Science and Technology. Tamrakar is Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai´s sister-in-law.

However, TU registrar Chandra Mani Poudel claimed faculty deans were appointed on the basis of seniority and competence. He further said that the TU would not invite NPA for talks. “We are aware that NPA members want to bargain for the posts of faculty deans, but we will not condone this wrong practice,” said Poudel.

NPA chairman Bhandari has threatened to padlock the TU entrance gate if their demands are not met within a week. The TU Professors´ Association had taken TU officials hostage for 28 hours demanding permanent positions for 13,000 lecturers hired on contract in September.
