KATHMANDU, July 30:Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) has urged the government to form a permanent Hajj Committee to ensure a hassle-free pilgrimage to Mecca for millions of Muslims in the country.

Submitting a three point memorandum to the Chairman of interim election council Khil Raj Regmi, the TMDP Chairman Mahanth Thakur has also requested the government to waive passport and medical fees for the pilgrims who go for the Hajj during the holy month of Zul-Hijjah. [break]

“The government should allot certain fund for their food and accommodation,” memorandum reads. The party has also demanded to set up a Hajj House in Kathmandu to provide a proper accommodation for the pilgrims who arrive in the capital on their way to Mecca. [break]

“The government is positive toward our demands and they have directed the concerned authorities to address the concerns as soon as possible,” Joint-Secretary of the party Jitendra Sonal told Republica.

“The government has asked the Muslim community to arrange a common fund to set up the Hajj house, and has also assured us that it will contribute some money for the same,” he added.

He said that the government also informed them that it has already taken initiatives to waive health checkup fee for the Hajj pilgrims, and to make necessary arrangements for the poor Muslim pilgrims wishing to go for Hajj.

Islami Sangh Nepal Chairman Nazrool Hasan Falahi has cautiously welcomed the TMDP´s initiative.

“This is a positive step taken by a party in the view of Constituent Assembly (CA) election,” said Falahi, adding, “We expect that the current technocratic government would address our concerns.”

He said that if the government provides land in the capital for Hajj Committee, they will raise necessary funds to set up the organization.

However, he was quick to add that “we hope this demand would not again become mere election slogan,” said Falahi.
