Three killed in stone quarry

TANAHU, Feb 5: Three mine-workers, who were extracting khari dhunga (talc), used in manufacturing medicines, from a quarry in Manpang of Tanahu were killed Saturday after being crushed by stones that fell over them.



The dead have been identified as Deu Bahadur Ale, 22, his little brother Jag Bahadur Ale, and Bir Bahadur Khamcha (Purna), 22, all of them residents of Deurali-1, Mohandanda in Nawalparasi district. Chitra Bahadur Soti, another worker, was injured in the incident.[break]



According to Sub Inspector Lal Bahdur Sonam, Chitra was injured when he entered the quarry to rescue his co-workers buried under stones. He is receiving treatment at Damauli hospital, where the bodies of the dead mine-workers have been kept for post-mortem.



A team of policemen, who reached the quarry within a few hours of the tragedy, rescued Chitra with help from the local people. Chitra, who has sustained injuries to his waist and head, said they were extracting khari dhunga for a pharmaceutical factory based in Nawalparasi. They all had reached Manpang only 10 days ago to work on daily-wage basis.



“We were promised Rs 200 a day for extracting khari dhunga,” Chitra told Republica. “We, 15 youths from Nawalparasi, were in Manpang.”


Three die in separate road accidents



KATHMANDU: Three persons were killed in separate road accidents across the country on Saturday. Raj Kumar Pariyar, 25, of Bakdhuwa-6, Saptari and Pushpa Gharti of Nepaltar, Udayapur died when a passenger bus heading for Narayangadh from Dhara hit the Gaihari bridge near Sitapur Saturday afternoon, according to our Lahan correspomdemt Mithilesh Yadav.Nine others injured in the accident have been taken to the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on referral of the Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital, Rajbiraj. Meanwhile a Nepal Police constable died after being run over by truck in Amlekhgunj, Bara Friday midnight. Kamal Poudel, 26, of Shankarnagar, Rupandehi was posted at the Amlekhgunj Police Post.



One buried under soil


BARDIYA: A man was killed after being buried under soil while digging a tank for petrol pump Saturday morning. Patu Ram Chaudhary, 32, of Gulariya-2 died while his four colleagues survived when the soil caved in during construction of Ram Chandra Yadav´s petrol pump in Khairapur-4.
