KATHMANDU, June 19: “Only having a good voice won’t suffice to be a radio jockey,” says, Sumeet Sigdel a popular voice of the Nepali radio.

Currently busy working on his new venture ‘Radio Revolution,’ a one of a kind online radio in Nepal, alongside a few of his friends, Sumeet believes radio in Nepal needs immediate changes.“We have above 35 stations and yet we lack quality,” he sighs adding “Radio Revolution will work on that.” [break]

The online station, Radio Revolution provides different genres of music depending on what you want to listen to. The station currently streams dance, blues, metal, Nepali adhunik, Nepali folk, pop and rock music.

Sumeet shared a brief chat with Republica. Excerpts:

It’s been 11 years with the radio, how had the journey been?

Oh yes! It’s been a beautiful journey and a learning one, although I had never planned on becoming an RJ during my younger years. While at school I dreamed of becoming a wildlife expert but not everything happens exactly the way you plan it right! Life took a different turn than I expected but I have no regrets. I have had a wonderful decade with Radio Kantipur, where I received a lot of love from my listeners. And although I no longer am a part of the station I hope I will still receive as much love and things won’t change.

So what made you leave Radio Kantipur?

Radio Kantipur is a great place to work but I had been there for 11 years and things were getting pretty monotonous. See everyone needs change and growth and if that doesn’t happen its best to move on.

What is different about this online radio?

It’s different because of a lot of things. For the first time the audiences will not just listen to the RJ but will also be able to see how the RJ looks and how things are done in the studio. Also at our online portal you have direct access to songs, all you have to do is click. We have our best to give our audience the best of music. One thing I’d like to mention here is that the radio is not live throughout the day, it’s from seven to eleven in the mornings and at the same timings in the evening.

What’s your immediate future plan?

Well, for now I have my mind set up on Radio Revolution. We have to bring a change and improve the quality of radio in Nepal. In the current Nepali radio industry there seems to be a lot of people who are calling themselves RJ’s only because of their personal network. Quality today seems to have taken a back seat and that is what I look forward to change.
