Debuting with the movie “3 Lovers” in 2012, Karki has been actively involved in experimenting with newer roles in her films.
Apart from her acting, she is also involved in modeling for some of Nepal’s top fashion designers, and therefore, has earned huge acclaims for her versatility.[break]
The Week talked to Priyanka who spoke about her professional and personal interests.
People see you as a glamorous actor. What is Priyanka Karki in real life?
I’m a very fun person who gets random at times. I love laughing and expressing myself, as I consider myself an open book.
What qualities do you think a good actor should possess? Do you think you have those qualities?
I don’t think there’s any fixed criterion for being a good actor as with every movie she plays, she progresses concurrently. However, I believe any actor expressing strong dedication to and love for her profession is a good actor. I try to incorporate these two qualities in my own acting.
You’ve been experimenting with different characters. How do you decide on your films?
As an actor, I try to progress with every movie I act in. Therefore, I always select films where my role seems to be challenging. Moreover, I try to experiment with newer characters with every movie so that I can establish versatility in my acting.
How much value do you place on awards?
Awards are really essential for boosting an actor’s confidence, as they are a testimony of appreciation of one’s hard work and dedication. However, when award ceremonies turn out to be unfair and monopolized, the awards distributed in such ceremonies seem to have no values for me. Nevertheless, not all award ceremonies are unfair, and in such fair competitions, the awards provided turn out to be moral boosters for actors.
How glamorous is the Nepali film industry?
The Nepali film industry has always been glamorous and is transcending gradually in its glamour factor. However, in recent times, many associates in this industry have misinterpreted glamour for vulgarity, and have reflected such notion in their films. But I don’t worry, as things are changing for the better, and the industry is definitely progressing in its glamour factors.
What are your upcoming films?
I’ve bagged three films, with “Jholay” being my upcoming release. It’s a dark comedy where I’m portrayed as a prostitute. Likewise, in my next movie “Suntali,” I’m depicted as a simple village girl. My third project “Aawaran” is a murder mystery.
Apart from films, what are the other projects you’re involved in?
I’m focusing fully on my acting, as I want to squeeze out the best in me. Therefore, at present, I’m not involved in any other projects apart from films.
You’re also a fashionable actor. Do you keep yourself updated with the latest fashion trends?
I feel it’s really important to update oneself with the latest fashion trends. Therefore, I try my best to incorporate such trends in my regular getups. Many of us know that most trends prevailing in Nepali fashion are derived from international markets. While some of these international fashion trends seem too bold for Nepali society, I try blending such global trends with Nepali alternatives.
Tell us about your interest in dancing.
Dancing is my pure passion. Therefore, I’ve taken formal dance training from the age of four. Whichever educational institutes I joined, I have always pursued dancing. From classical to ballroom and ballet, I have never hesitated from learning newer dance forms.
What’s your idea of a good holiday?
For me, an ideal holiday is all about disconnecting with the outer world and limiting myself to my dear ones. It’s not always essential to visit new places, as I believe holidays can be enjoyed by spending quality time at home with my family and my pet.
