KATHMANDU, April 17: India’s Home Minister P Chidambaram raised serious concerns, saying that new routes for infiltration appeared to have opened via Nepal and Bangladesh to carry out terrorist attacks in India.

"Every week has witnessed attempts to infiltrate into India and new routes appear to have been opened via Nepal and Bangladesh," The Times of India quoted Chidambaram as saying, while addressing a meeting of chief ministers on internal security in New Delhi. [break]

In his address Monday, the Indian union home minister also described left wing extremism as the "most formidable threat" to India’s internal security and underscored the need to find ways to blunt the offensives by the CPI (Maoist).

Also, Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed concerns over a range of problems related to the 726-km long porous Bihar border with Nepal, including illegal infiltration, smuggling of narcotics, fake currency notes, human trafficking and criminal activities.

According to The Times of India, the Bihar chief minister pointed out the need for ‘heavy deployment of Sashastra Seema Bal ( SSB) personnel along the border’ and ‘speedy construction work on border roads and regular joint surveillance on the border by the police of both the countries.’

Likewise, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav pointed out that the Nepal-India open border as cause of security concerns for India and sought ‘special policing’ by the centre to tackle any ‘anti-national activity’ along the UP-Nepal border.

“I would like to draw the attention of the Centre to the need for establishing adequate number of integrated check-posts and special police arrangements to control any possible anti-national activities along the 550-km-long open border with Nepal,” The Hindu quoted Yadav as saying.
