Tension in Birgunj jail

BIRGUNJ, Feb 24: Birgunj district jail remained tense since Friday evening follwoing a clash between old and new inmates in the prison.



Some prisoners started demonstration and chanted slogans demanding better management inside the jail and shifting of some of the inmates elsewhere. [break]



The security had to be tightened after the demonstrators started pelting stones and the police had to use tear gas to bring the situation under control. There are 1120 inmates in the jail currently.



According to Jailor Rupnarayan Baire, few infamous convicts who brought there from other jails have been trying to create problems.



"The convicts want to establish their superiority in the jail. That is why they are creating problems," he said. Deepk Shah, Chandra Bahadur Thapa Magar and Rajendra Magar were lately shifted to the jail from Chitwan.



Similarly, Nabin Thapa and Kisan Gurung were brought from Tanahu jail. Inmates have come here from Parsa jail as well.



The prisoners have been demanding an end to corruption by the jail administration, better food quality and shifting of six inmates to other place.
