KATHMANDU, Nov 16: The government has formed a taskforce to manage public transportation in the capital in the wake of the fuel crisis. The move is aimed at making transportation on public vehicles more convenient for the general public.

A meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Monday on the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Som Lal Subedi decided to form a four-member taskforce to suggest measures to the government on managing public transportation in the Kathmandu valley. The taskforce, which is led by Director General of Department of Roads Madhav Kumar Regmi, has been assigned to submit a report to Chief Secretary Subedi within 15 days."Public transportation has turned out to be the main means of commuting amid the ongoing crisis. So, the government formed the taskforce to manage public vehicles more efficiently in order to make travelling more convenient for the general public," said Uttar Kumar Khatri, spokesperson of the PMO.

He said the taskforce will recommend routes where public vehicles can be managed more efficiently.

Lately, only limited number of public vehicles are plying on roads of the capital due to the blockade imposed by India, forcing passengers to travel in vehicles crammed with people.

A press statement issued by the PMO also stated that the taskforce, which comprises representatives of the PMO, Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) and Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, will also suggest measures to oblige public vehicles to ply only on dedicated lanes on roads.

Chief Secretary Subedi has also directed the taskforce to give inputs to the government to improve the existing laws related to road lane disciplines, informed officials who attended the meeting.

Similarly, the meeting also directed the DoTM to submit its report on Vehicle Fitness Test in every six months.
