According to Chief District Officer (CDO) Kiran Thapa, police will be mobilized in the villages to size all illegally possessed weapons after the expiry of the deadline.
CDO Thapa also informed that only 49 weapons license have been renewed out of 330 licensed firearms recorded in the district. Thapa added that weapons without renewed licenses have been declared illegal.
“Firearms failing to get their licenses renewed within the deadline will be counted as illegal. After that, security personnel will be sent to the villages to confiscate the illegal weapons,” said Thapa.
As per records at the District Administration Office, 117 guns of 12-bore caliber were issued permits in the past but the licenses of only 37 of them are found to have been renewed. Similarly, out of 14 guns of 22-bore caliber, the licenses of only 12 were renewed.
Weapons numbering 201 including double-barrel guns, air guns and single-barrel home made guns have not had their licenses renewed for a long time. It has been found that the licenses for 60 percent of firearms possessed by the public have not been renewed for up to 15 years.
The district administration has informed that owners of license-expired firearms can renew the permits on payment of up to Rs 2,500. They will still have a chance to renew their licenses for the next 35 days upon payment of double fees if they had missed the 35-day deadline. However, the weapons owners have to furnish reasons for failing to meet the first deadline.
After the end of the decade-long armed conflict, the security committee had called on the public to submit all their weapons to the administration. Nevertheless, people have been turning a deaf ear to the administration´s call.
