BIRGUNJ, Nov 19: Nepali policymakers on Saturday stressed on the need to tap the vast Indian and Chinese markets if the country is to enjoy higher economic growth through exports growth.

Rameshwore Prasad Khanal, economic advisor of the Prime Minister Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai, said land-locked Nepal could take benefit from the rapid economic growth of the two Asian giants that provide ample market for Nepali exportable goods. [break]

“Since, Nepal is not only land-locked but also market-locked, we can achieve economic growth by exploiting the huge markets in China and India,” said Khanal at an interaction in Birgunj on Saturday.

Stating that all political parties are unanimously backing the liberal market policy, Khanal said the country couldn´t back out of that policy.

Defending the recently signed Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) with India, Khanal said the bilateral economic agreement was signed to end the trend of exporting human resources and importing goods by encouraging more investment into the country.

Lawmaker Gagan Thapa underlined the need to benefit from the Chinese and Indian markets. He urged business people to pursue genuine business attitude. Rajendra Khetan, another lawmaker and industrialist, stressed the need for Nepali business entrepreneurs to devise long-term and short-term plans to strengthen the competitiveness to retain the market.

“Though we have signed bilateral and multi-lateral trade agreements, we have failed to take advantage of such pacts to boost Nepal´s trade,” said Khetan. He also requested not to politicize the hydropower sector which can hamper its development in the country.

Superintendent of Police of Parsa district Ramesh Kharel said revenue collection would go up in the country if peace and order is restored.
