Syria adds more agony to Nepal

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Nepal lost its last match in the Nehru Cup, football tournament, as Syria thumped Nepal 2-0 on Thursday at JLN Stadium in New Delhi.



Nepal was spirited by a goalless draw against the host India on Tuesday but its hope to end the tournament on a high note shattered as Syria took the advantage of poor defending.[break]



Hani Altayar scored the first goal for Syria in the ninth minute of the match and Ali Ghlioum doubled the score in the 49th minute. Ghlioum beat Sujal Shrestha and put the ball into the net.



Nepal had a chance to score in the seventh minute but Bharat Khawas tumbled in the danger area to simply hand over the ball to Syrian goalkeeper.

In the 14th minute, Nepali goalkeeper Kiran Chemjong blocked a shot from Almedani. Likewise, Bhola Silwal cleared a goal-bound ball in the 48th minute but Syria scored a minute later to seal the match 2-0.



Nepal coach Krishna Thapa said that his boys could not produce good results despite tough labor.



Nepal and Syria were already out of the tournament and played the last match under no pressure.



However, Nepal could not take the advantage of it and suffered third defeat in the tournament. Nepal finished at the bottom of the points table in the tournament participated by five nations.



Nepal earned only one point and scored only one goal during the entire tournament. Jumanu Rai had scored the lone goal for Nepal in the match against the Maldives, which Nepal lost 2-1.



Nepal conceded nine goals during the tournament.
