As per the deal, NPGA will organize minimum of eight professional Golf tournaments as part of the tour every year for the next three years taking the total pro events to 11. The prize money this year will be increased from last year´s Rs 5.3 million to Rs 7.5 million and there will be 10 percent increment in prize money every year.

NPGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha and Sales and Marketing Vice-president of Surya Nepal LB Singh signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) amidst a press conference on Thursday in Kathmandu.

“Golf is gaining popularity with support from Surya Nepal. There were only 19 professional golfers in Nepal when we signed the sponsorship deal three years ago but we have 44 pros now,” said Shrestha.

Surya Nepal Vice-president Singh said his company is very happy with the past tours and hope for another good three years. “We could explore other sporting arenas but nothing as such has been fixed yet. We are focused in golf since we are focusing in sports tourism. And this is possible through golf,” said Singh.

NPGA General-secretary Deepak Acharya said they have achieved a lot in the last three years through their association with Surya Nepal.  “Players have gone to India for professional tournaments and we hope some will go further ahead in the days to come,” said Acharya. “With the growth of prize money and hope of a good life, many amateurs will turn pro,” added Acharya.

Surya Nepal has been sponsoring professional golf tournaments in Nepal since 1993.
