According to DDC officials, they have proposed providing grants for persons or families attracting foreign tourists, except Indian nationals, for home stay.[break] “The grant amount will be decided by the district council,” said local district officer Hira Lal Regmi. He also said organizations holding meetings or seminars attended by more than 100 foreign delegates (only those visiting the country via air) will also get grant.
Officials said they would also recommend for free registration of tourism-based businesses or non-government organizations and provide grant for their institutional development.
“We are hopeful that this would help in the long-term development of tourism sector in the district,” Regmi said, expressing hope that this would also help attract more tourists to the district.
The DDC is also mulling over providing 50 percent of the total investment of organizations established to promote and conserve tourist areas in the district as grant. It has also announced to facilitate persons or organizations making significant contribution in tourism development in the district.
Tourism stakeholders in the district have welcomed the decision and said it would help support their efforts for tourism development. “Decisions like these will help in the success of Nepal Tourism Year campaign and contribute to tourism development in the long run,” said Padam Bahadur Shahi, general secretary of Surkhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He also suggested upgrading Surkhet Airport and identifying and promoting new destinations for the success of NTY campaign.
