Substandard rice seized in Pokhara

POKHARA, Sept 13: Market Inspection Committee Tuesday seized more that 1,000 sacks of substandard rice from three stores of Pokhara.



The inspection team of the committee had seized 430 sacks of rice from Sumit Suppliers, 370 sacks from Santosh Food and 206 sacks from Navin Retail Store.[break]



Along with substandard rice, the committee has also confiscated expired peas, dried coconut, black lentil, powdered milk, Mirinda, candies and tea from those stores.



“All the substandard products have been destroyed,” Sambhu Kumar Jha, chief of Standards and Metrology Office, Kaski, said.



The committee had confiscated 24 sacks of chickpea, 25 sacks of peas, 20 sacks of corn from Sumit Suppliers.



“Food items such as peas, coconut, black lentil and powdered milk that were found inedible were destroyed in front of public,” Jha said.



Likewise, 16 bottles of expired Mirinda were confiscated from Santosh Food Suppliers. The store was also found using tampered weighing machines, according to the committee.



Similarly, 36 packets of candies, few packets of tea and seven packets of dalmot were seized from Navin Retail Store.



“The owners of all three stores have been instructed to submit clarification within three days,” Jha said.
