KATHMANDU, July 7: Student unions on Saturday smeared black soot on the hoarding boards of half a dozen private colleges with foreign names.

A group of students belonging to eight different unions, including Nepal Student Union (NSU), All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU) and All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) - affiliated to the Mohan Baidya-led CPN (Maoist) smeared soot on the hoarding boards of Florida College, NASA college, White House College and Columbus College. “It is just a beginning,” said Shiva Rimal, chief office secretary of NSU. “We´ll continue our movement.” Rimal said the movement, if supported by guardians and civil society, will force the government to take strict action against private colleges using foreign names to attract students.

The student unions say there are around 50 colleges that have named themselves after foreign cities, places or institutions.

They say they will erase all the names from the hoarding boards of all such colleges. The sixth amendment to the Education Act in 2051 BS says educational institutions should adopt names that reflect Nepal´s culture, history, geography, heritage or that honor national or social figures.
