DHARAN, Sep 11: In a decision that can show the way forward for industries, which are stuck with labour issues that sometimes lead to closure of the business itself, four drug makers in Dharan have decided to increase the salary of workers by Rs 1,400 a month to get them back on the job.

The talks between the management and the workers´ representatives also decided to provide salary for 3 days out of 6 days when the workers did not work. [break]

The management of Manoj Pharmaceuticals, Shiva Pharmaceutical Works, Manoj Chemical Works and Makalu Herbs Production had announced closure of their production facilities on September 4 after the workers stopped work insisting for a raise of Rs 1,600 a month in line with the government approved wage structure announced on May 15.

These firms are likely to resume operations from Sunday. The decision to resume the work came after the workers´ representatives and the management reached an agreement on four points put forward by the workers.

According to the management of the firms, they were compelled to shut down the factories after the workers halted the production all of a sudden on September 2.

“As the the salary and dearness allowance issue is sub-judice at the Supreme Court (SC), the management decided to increase the wages by Rs 1,400 a month in advance with effect from August 18. If the SC decision goes against the workers, we will deduct the amount from their salary. But in case the court upholds the government approved wage structure or delays the decision, the companies will pay up the remaining Rs 200 a month,” informed Bhupal BK, coordinator of Joint Struggle Committee.

Representatives of All Nepal Trade Union which is affiliated with the ruling UCPN (Maoist) and UML, workers representatives, industrialist Govinda Ram Agrawal and Manoj Agrawal were present during the talk.
