RUKUM, May 28: Prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed in Rukum, thanks to eight-day vehicular strike in the mid-western hilly district.

Vehicles have stayed off the roads since eight days due to dispute among transport entrepreneurs. This has created shortage of essential commodities like pulses and rice as well as LPG gas, diesel and petrol.[break]

“We have no option but to use firewood to cook our meals due to unavailability of cooking gas,” Nawaraj Giri, a hotel entrepreneur, said, adding, “I am ready to pay high price, but I haven’t been able to find any.”

Giri further added that shortage of essential food commodities has hit his business.

Dispute among entrepreneurs began with the split of Salyan-Rukum Unified Transport Entrepreneurs - an association of transport entrepreneurs of Salyan and Rukum districts. Transport entrepreneurs in Rukum have formed a new committee -- Sisne Himal Committee.

Bhim Bahadur Malla, vice-president of Sisne Himal Committee, said talks between entrepreneurs of the two districts have been failing repeatedly. Failure of talks has made resumption of transport services uncertain.

Meanwhile, locals have demanded local administration to interfere in transport entrepreneurs’ dispute and help resume vehicular movement at the earliest.
