KATHMANDU, July 23: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has warned the prime minister of tides of protests across the country against his government if he remained adamant on holding on to his post.

"The public anger against this totalitarian government has reached its peak and the situation is ripe for launching protests against this coalition," Khanal said at a function in Kathmandu on Monday. [break]

"The prime minister can either wait till the tides sweep his government away or can step down for paving the way for consensus." Khanal said that the ball is in the prime minister´s court.

He argued that consensus among the major political forces on ending the present political stalemate was possible if Maoist leaders showed willingness for it.

He ruled out any possibility of holding Constituent Assembly (CA) elections by November 22. "Even the Election Commission has clearly informed that the election can´t be held under the present scenario," he said.
