KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of legislature-parliament on Sunday directed the Salt Trading Corporation (STC) to furnish documents that give the corporation an exclusive authority to conduct salt trade.

“We have directed the STC management to furnish all documents, including agreement between STC and the government, along with its audited financial status within a week,” said Som Bahadur Thapa, secretary of the PAC. [break]

STC has been conducting salt trade as per the tripartite agreement between STC, the Government of Nepal and the Japanese government.

Responding to complaints that STC has been charging exorbitant price on salt, the PAC had summoned Commerce Secretary Purushottam Ojha and STC General Manager Urmila Shrestha on Sunday´s meeting.

The meeting also directed the STC management, which has been selling salt for Rs 15 per kg, to submit cost breakdown.

“Most of the PAC members voiced concerns over exorbitant pricing by STC,” Thapa said.

The government holds 20 percent stake in STC.
