BIRATNAGAR, March 31: Nepali Congress (NC) Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel on Saturday said the new constitution can be promulgated by the May 28 deadline if the Maoists help conclude the peace process by mid-April.

Talking to media persons at Biratnagar Airport, Paudel said the new constitution can be promulgated within the deadline if the Maoists hand over weapons to the government. [break]

“The recent agreement in Special Committee has helped end the political stalemate,” he said. “But we still doubt if the Maoists would cooperate.” He said the parties would take initiatives to form national consensus government once the Maoists conclude peace process.

Paudel also accused the communist parties of weakening national unity. “Communist parties´ double standards have weakened the national unity,” he said.

Paudel said NC is not against federalism. “NC is firm in its stance that federalism should be based on identity,” he added.

Panel to resolve NSU row

NC President Sushil Koirala has entrusted a three-member panel headed by Vice- president Paudel to resolve the differences over the formation of ad hoc committee of Nepal Students´ Union (NSU).

The panel comprises party general secretaries Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula. The decision comes at a time when NSU cadres loyal to Sher Bahadur Deuba have demanded an early NSU general convention.

An informal meeting of NC leaders held at Koirala´s residence had decided to form the panel, said NC leader Minendra Rijal.
