Speaking at a press conference in Itahari, Gajurel said common people are desperate to see the country switched to federalism and the Maoists decided to declare autonomous states, keeping in mind with the people´s desire.
Gajurel said the party decided to declare autonomous states to pile pressure on the government. He added that the declaration of Kirant state by Gopal Kiranti a few weeks ago was against the party´s policy and that is why he faced action in the party.
Though the world might see Maoist movement as a bid to hamper constitution making, Gajurel said, the movement was the need and demand of the time. He said the movement would turn into a people´s revolt if the state tried to suppress the movement. He said the Maoist movement will restore the people´s sovereignty. He said the Maoists were in the process of capturing the state through armed movement in the past but the situation has changed now and that a favorable situation is being created for capturing the state with people´s power without using the arms.
He said the UCPN-Maoist postponed the party´s general convention so that the party could gather enough power for the movement.
Saying that there is a risk of different armed ethnic groups declaring states on their own, Gajurel said the Maoists will declare the states on the basis of the concept of federalism prepared by the party. He said declaration of states by ethnic groups on their own will push the country to civil war and the Maoists decided to declare the states to pile pressure on the government to write constitution on time and declare formation of federal states as per the new constitution.
He said Maoist Chairman Prachanda had talked only about giving a way out to the country´s current deadlock with Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala in Singapore, but the NC and UML leaders were blowing the Singapore meeting out of proportion by portraying the talks as an agreement between the two leaders to oust the current government.
Gajurel said CPN-UML is a party without any principles and it was running the government at the direction of the Nepali Congress.
