SSP Thapa ordered to pay Rs 7m bail

KATHMANDU, July 17: Special Court has demanded seven million rupees in bail from suspended Senior Superintendent of Police Shyam Bahadur Thapa for his alleged involvement in the multi-million rupee armored personnel carriers (APCs) purchase scam.



A joint bench of justices Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise passed a verdict to this effect on Sunday. Thapa was sent to Dillibazar jail after he failed to submit the bail amount. [break]



The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has accused a total 34 senior police officials of embezzling about Rs 290 million while procuring the APCs and other logistics meant for the Nepal Police peacekeepers in Darfur, Sudan, Thapa is the fourth police officer to be sent into judicial custody.



Prior to this, Special Court demanded Rs 3.5 million from then Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinesh KC and Rs 10 million from former Additional Inspector General (AIG) Dipendra Bahadur Bista. Likewise, the court demanded Rs 50 million from former Inspector General Hem Bahadur Gurung.



Though DSP KC and the former AIG were released from jail after they submitted the bail, former IG Gurung is still in judicial custody.
