SPORTS BRIEFS: Weightlifting tournament postponed

KATHMANDU, March 21: Nepal Weightlifting Association postponed the First Shalimar Open Men´s and Women´s National Weightlifting Tournament. The tournament scheduled to be organized in Birgunj from March 20 to 23. NWA informed that the tournament is postponed due to technical reasons but would be organized by mid April. Birgunj Swimming Pool and Health Club is the co-organizer of the tournament.[break]



Nat´l Wushu Championship

KATHMANDU
: Nepal Wushu Association announced to organize the Ninth National Wushu Championship in Kathmandu on the third week of April. According to the association, the tournament would be organized at the National Sports Council Covered Hall from April 18 to 20.



Basketball tournament with biggest cash prize

KATHMANDU
: University Sports Association Nepal (USAN) announced to host the First University Basketball Tournament from May 8 to 24 in Kathmandu. USAN General Secretary Purna Singh Bohara claimed that the tournament would be the biggest basketball tournament in terms of cash prize. According to Bohara, the winner of the tournament will receive Rs 110,000 while runner-up will bag Rs 70,000.



The third-place holder will get Rs 35,000 while the most valuable player of the tournament will receive Rs 10,000. "Around 200 male basketball players from the colleges affiliated to the five universities of the country are expected to participate in the tournament," said Bohara. According to Bohara, the tournament would be a base for the USAN to select Nepali team for the Summer Universiade to be held in Kazan, Russia in July.
