SPORTS BRIEFS: Thapa, Gurung in final

KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Two time champion Hira Bahadur Thapa has confirmed final spot in men’s singles during the Third NSRA Open Squash Tournament on Saturday.



Thapa will meet Suresh Gurung in the final on Sunday. In the first semifinal, Thapa eased past Bal Kumar Shrestha in three straight sets. [break]



Thapa took hold of the first set 11-4 and the second 11-3 each in second and third respectively. In another semifinal, Gurung beat Prajwal Prakash Pradhan in straight sets of 11-4, 11-9, 11-7 respectively. In the veterans’ single category of above 40 years age group, Manoj Bahadur Shrestha will meet the winner between Lokendra Man Singh Bhandari and Bhusan Krishna Shrestha. Manoj Bahadur Shrestha overcame Mahendra Maharjan 11-5, 14-16, 11-8, 12-10 respectively for the final spot. In the men’s single plate section, Gaurav Katuwal and Bhusan Krishna Shrestha fixed the final spot. Katuwal defeated Rajesh Mani Ghimire 11-6, 11-3, 11-7, and Shrestha had a hard fought 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-win over Bidhur Dhamala.



Sri Kumari, Nayabasti win
KATHMANDU: Shree Kumari Club and Nayabasti Sakshyam Club won their respective matches on Saturday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull C Division League Football Tournament held at Chyasal ground. Shree Kumari beat Naxal Yuva Mandal 1-0 with a lone goal from Krishna Karki in the 21st minute. Similarly, Nayabasti beat Bhagwati Club with 1-0 score as well, Dhiraj Shrestha scored the all important goal for Nayabasti in the 63rd minute.
