SPORTS BRIEFS: Shrestha receives financial support

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama on Friday handed over the cash collected from former boxers and boxing well-wisher for treatment of boxing coach and former player Krishna Man Shrestha. Shrestha, who is suffering from motor neuron disease and vein problems for a long time, was given Rs 219,757.



Shrestha had already received Rs 86,000 from Nepal Boxing Association and Rs 10,000 from Naxal Yuva Mandal. Doctors involved in Shrestha´s treatment had asked him to get further treatment in India. Shrestha had won silver medal in the Fifth South Asian Games (SAG) and bronze in seventh SAG. [break]



Apple starts with win

KATHMANDU: Apple Academy on Friday started the Coca Cola Inter-school Girls´ National Football Tournament in a winning note. In the match held at Chyasal ground, Apple registered a comfortable 3-0 victory over Arunima Higher Secondary School. Samana Maharjan scored two goals while Sushila Tamang scored another goal for the winning side. In another match, DAV School edged past Shahid Sukra Higher Secondary School 1-0 with a goal from Pari Limbu.



Nepal placed in group B for Elite Cup

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been placed in group B along with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and UAE for the ACC Trophy Elite Cup scheduled to be held on August 1-13 in UAE. According to ACC, Afghanistan, which is the defending champion, and Malaysia, Oman, Bhutan and Maldives have been placed in Group A.
