With the win Bhattarai bagged a purse of Rs 5,000 while Limbu had to settle for Rs 3,000. In the same event, Sita Dhamala and Krishna Dhungana finished joint third and took away Rs 2,000 each. In the boy’s category, Umesh Rai defeated Ashish Rai 11-8, 11-13, 11-8 to secure the first position. Jeevan Bista and Krishna Dahal finished combined third. Rai bagged Rs 5,000 as the winner while the second and the third position holders received Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. Altogether 104 players -- 64 male and 40 female -- had participated in the two-day tournament organized by Nepal Table Tennis Association of the Blind. Among the total participants, 91 were visually impaired while the others played the game blindfolded.
Kathmandu wins Karate C’ship
KATHMANDU: Kathmandu won the title of the Ninth Bagmati Zonal Siteryo Karate Championship on Saturday. Kathmandu won six gold medals and a bronze to lift the championship trophy. Host Nepal Siteryo Karate Association, Lainchaur Dojo claimed five gold, six silver, three bronze medals and stood in the second position. Urmila DC, who won women’s 45 kg weight category, was adjudged woman of the tournament.
Nava Jagriti in final
KATHMANDU: Nava Jagriti School reached the final round of Coca-cola Inter-school National Football Tournament being held at the ANFA Complex, Satdobato, Lalitpur from group ‘B’ on Saturday. Nava Jagriti defeated GEMS 3-0 in penalty shoot-out after the regular time ended in a goalless draw. In other matches of the day, World Youth International, Kathmandu School, Trijyoti School and Army School registered victories. World Youth beat Malpi 3-1with the help of two goals from Season Shrestha. In another match, Prem Chandra Ghimire’s two goals helped Kathmandu School thrash Edify School 4-0. Likewise, Trijyoti beat Beats Academy 4-2 in penalty shootout and Army School saw off Deep Jyoti School 3-1 in a tie breaker.
Eastern Region wins team C’ship title
KATHMANDU: Eastern Region lifted the team championship trophy of the fifth Wadokai Karate Tournament on Saturday clinching 13 gold, 11 silver and eight bronze medals. Central Region bagged four gold, four silver and six bronze medals to finish second in the two-day tournament held at Hetauda. Western region settled for the third position with a gold and nine bronze medals. Rupa Maharjan from Eastern region was adjudged the best female player of the tournament while Jeevan Angdambe was named the best player in the male category.
Lama leads chess tourney
KATHMANDU: Former national champion Surbir Lama took lead with 3.5 points in the ongoing Makhan Cup Chess Tournament on Saturday after the completion of the third and fourth rounds. Lama defeated Tara Ghale in the third round and Ashmita Adhikari in the fourth round. FIDE master Manish Hamal, Rajendra Prashad Shrestha and Rajan Puri are jointly second with three points. Hamal defeated Rajendra Rajbhandari and was held to a draw by Suraj Pandit. Shrestha drew both of his matches, one against Navin Tandukar and the other against Rajan Puri. Meanwhile, Puri registered a win over Gyanendra Prashad Shrestha. Prem Krishna Maharjan and Rajendra Rajbhandari have 2.5 points each while Rakesh Rauniar, Navin Tandukar and Shyam Sundar Shrestha have 2 points each.
