SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal takes on Kuwait Friday

KATHMANDU, May 3: Nepal will take on Kuwait on Friday at the Bayuemas Oval Cricket Ground in its first match of the ACC U-16 Elite Cup being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.



Nepal is placed in the group B of the tournament along with Malaysia, Kuwait, Iran and Bahrain. Nepali team under coach Manjur Alam Khan and captain Dipendra Chand is participating in the tournament. [break]



Nepal had defeated Kuwait in the first edition of the ACC U-16 Elite Cup held in Nepal in 2010. Nepal had won the match by 101 runs and Nischal Pandey had scored 59 runs and taken five wickets in the match.



Current U-16 captain Dipendra Chand and his teammate Jagdish Chand were also the part of the Nepali U-16 team that beat Kuwait in 2010. Nepal had lost to Singapore in the final of the first edition.


Angels Heart into quarterfinals


KATHMANDU: Angels Heart on Thursday advanced into the girls´ quarterfinals of the Second NEA Cup Basketball Tournament being held in the capital as the group winner. Angels Heart defeated host Nawajiwan 16-10 riding on seven points of Kamala Pun. Valley Public thumped Abhiyan School 42-28. Sinwoli Gadal contributed 20 points for the winning side. Siddhartha Banasthali edged past Bishnumati 18-12. Under boy´s section, TIA saw off Third Eye 27-17, Siddhartha Vanasthali thrashed British School 28-7 and Valley Public edged past HHCA 41-29.



Galaxy Public triumphs


KATHMANDU: Galaxy Public School defeated Brihaspati School by seven wickets on Thursday in the Fifth Chief of Army Staff Inter-school T20 Cricket Tournament. In the league match played at the Army Ground, Bhaktapur, Brihaspati elected to bat first and collected 127/9. Following the run chase, Galaxy achieved the target in 128/3 in 16 overs. Pasang Sherpa topscored with 38 runs in Galaxy´s run chase. Nirmal Baral was unbeaten for 29 runs Bidhan Poudel scored 27. Galaxy got 31 extra runs. Prajwal Gurung and Biraj Tandukar claimed one wicket apiece of Galaxy. Earlier, Pratik Kant (34), Prajwal Gurung (24) and Nikhil Silakar (12) were the batsmen for Brihastapti to score double digit figure. Birhaspati got 39 extra runs. Aditya Pandey claimed two wickets for Galaxy.


Prime defends basketball title

KATHMANDU: Prime defended the boys´ title of KCM Basketball Bash on Thursday with 48-37 victory over Golden Gate during the final held in capital. Prime shaped its victory in the first and last quarter scoring 13-6 and 21-15. Prime went down 6-7 and 8-9 in the second and third quarter. Siddhartha Maharjan who netted highest 14 points for Prime in the final was declared the most valuable player. Anish Shahi had scored 15 points for Golden Gate. In the girl´s final, Premier registered 24-15 win over Prime. Anuska Malla scored highest eight points for Premier. Premier was ahead in all quarters other than second 4-8. Premier went ahead in other sets 6-4, 4-8 and 6-1. Malla was declared the most valuable player.
