SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal defeated by Colombia in chess

KATHMANDU, Aug 29: Nepal lost 4-0 to Colombia during its opening match of the 40th World Chess Olympiad being held in Turkey on Tuesday. National champion FIDE Master Mahish Hamal was beaten by GM Jaime Alexander Cuatas in the 37th move while Prachanda Man Malakar was beaten by GM Alonso Zapata, CM Keshav Shrestha was beaten by IM Alder Escobar Forero and Rupesh Jaiswal was defeated by GM Sergio Esneider Barrientos.



Hamal commented that they faced the defeat due to lack of experience and training despite throwing tough challenge. Nepal will take on New Zealand on Wednesday. [break]



Cycling team off to Bhutan


KATHMANDU: A three-member Nepali men´s cycling team left for Bhutan on Wednesday to compete in the third edition of Tour de Bhutan. Rajkumar Shrestha and Narayan Gopal Maharjan will compete from Nepali team. Shrestha and Maharjan have secured second and third positions in cycling during the Sixth National Games and the players were selected on the basis of their performance during the games. Ajay Pandit who finished first during the Games is not in the country. The event is considered as the marathon of mountain bike where the cyclists need to cover a distance of 268 km in a single day. It is also the longest distance cycling race of South Asia.



Double delight for TIA


KATHMANDU: Both the team of host TIA registered victories on Wednesday in the First TIA 9-A-Side Football Tournament being held in the capital. Both Red and Blue team of TIA made it to the pre-quarterfinals. TIA Red saw off Himalayan WhiteHouse 4-2with two goals from Chhiring Sherpa. Prabesh Kunwar and Bikram Ale got one goal each for the winning side. Shivaraj Thapa and Prasant Bhandari pulled one back each for WhiteHouse. Meanwhile Blue edged past Adarsha Janamaitri 3-0 with two goals coming from Dhiraj Tamang and another from Suraj Hamal. In other matches, Pyramid beat Takshyashila Academy 4-2, St Lawrence thrashed NIST 5-0 with a hat-trick from Deepesh Dhami.



HIMS, Golden Peak triumph


KATHMANDU: HIMS, Golden Peak and Universal achieved victories in the Seventh Valley Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. HIMS defeated Daffodil Public 46-35, Golden Peak toiled hard to beat Galaxy 38-37 and Universal overcame Greenland 29-26. In other matches, Deep Jyoti beat New Summit 29-25, Baba saw off Brihaspati 29-20 and Oasis edged past Himalaya 38-13.


Referee seminar kicks off

KATHMANDU: Nepal Judo Association has launched the Sixth National A and B Level Referee Seminar with the objective of producing qualified referees to conduct national level tournaments. Altogether 25 judo players holding black-belt are appearing for the B Level examination during the four-day seminar which kicked off on Wednesday. Those who pass the exams on Thursday will join seven other referees having B Level License and will conduct the NeCOS Cup Judo Tournament as referees on Friday and Saturday to obtain the A Level License. “The B Level referees must conduct a real tournament in order to obtain the A Level License,” said judo´s chief coach Birendra Ranjit, who is the coordinator of the seminar as well as a IJF Continental Referee. Other IJF referees who are conducting the seminar are Khadga Bahadur Dahal, Surya Narayan Shrestha and Dhruba Raj Shrestha.
