SPORTS BRIEFS: Malla wins ladies' title

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Prerana Malla won the ladies´ title of the Annual Winter Golf Tournament at the Army Officers´ Golf Club on Friday. Prerana scored 32 points to win the amateur event played under stableford format. Sandhya Rai became the runner-up with 27 points.



Altogether nine lady golfers had participated in the tournament sponsored by Prabhu Finance while around 60 male golfers are to participate in the tournament on Saturday. [break]



Gokarna keeps friendship trophy



KATHMANDU
: Gokarna Golf Club team led by Joseph Nathan won the friendship cup played between the golfers of Gokarna Golf Club and Royal Thimpu Golf Course on Friday. Fourteen teams from each side played a match under four-ball better-ball format. Gokarna Golf Club won 11 matches and played a draw to accumulate 23 points whereas Royal Thimpu was able to win only two matches and a draw for five points.



Gokarna´s Lobsang Tashi and Tendi Sherpa were the best winning team as they defeated their opponents on the 13th holes with six up. Wangchen Dhondup won the closest to the pin award and Tashi Dong bagged the longest drive award. Senior golfer KNS Thapa gave away the prizes to the winners. The event was played as a warm up for the Druk Air Open Golf Tournament 2012, which is to tee off at Gokarna on Saturday.



Oasis, The Sky Lark in semis



KATHMANDU
: Oasis stormed into the semifinals of the Fourth Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Friday with a 30-15 win over The Sky Lark School in the boys´ section. Interestingly, the girls´ team of The Sky Lark advanced to the semifinals defeating Oasis 15-10 in the match held on the court of NIMS in Tokha. In other matches, Daffodil (boys) and Pennwood (girls) registered wins in their respective category.



Saipal enters final



KATHMANDU
: The girls´ basketball team of Saipal Academy advanced into the final of the First British Council A Level Sports Meet on Friday to set up the final showdown with Ace. Saipal defeated Trinity 31-18 while Ace beat Lumbini 22-8 to secure their final berths. In the boys´ section, Triniti and Rupy´s won their respective matches to enter the final. Meanwhile, Amrita Adhikari of Trinity won the title of chess competition held during the sports meet. Sangam Khadka of Little Angel´s and Thomas Lama of Saipal finished second and third respectively.



New Vision beats Gyan Niketan



KATHMANDU
: New Vision defeated Gyan Niketan 22-10 during the Second Neric-Zenith Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the senior girls´ section on Friday. Meanwhile, Gyan Niketan saw off AIA 30-23 while Mount Glory beat Canvass 21-15 in the senior boy´s section.



Nepal to participate in CPL



KATHMANDU
: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is conducting selection tournament from Saturday to pick up a college cricket team to represent Nepal in the College Premier League (CPL) of India scheduled to be held in Bangalore from January 16 to 26. Altogether 16 teams from seven nations are set to participate in the CPL which will be held at the Jain University with the support from Karnatak State Cricket Board and CAN.
