U-14 tennis team off to Dhaka
KATHMANDU: An 11-member Nepali lawn tennis team left for Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Sunday to compete in the Asian U-14 Tennis Championship to be held there from October 10-16. Altogether, four boys and five girls will participate in the event. Ivan Ho Lissanevitch, Pranab Kayastha, Sakshyam Karki and Avash Malla are in the boys team while Aslesha Lissanevitch, Bhivuti Karki, Bijisha Shrestha and Rana duos Mahikar and Mayanka are in the girls team.
All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association (ANLTA) Vice-president Jyoti Rana is the team manager and Rameshwor Thapa, the coach of Little Angels, is the coach for the Nepali contingent. The tournament is being jointly organized by Asian Lawn Tennis Federation and Bangladesh Tennis Association. ANLTA President Manoj Rana and other office bearers bade farewell to the team.
Walkathon in US for Nepalis
KATHMANDU): Nepal ko Yuwa, a global Nepali youth movement, in collaboration with Nepali youths in Boston, is organizing a three-mile walkathon on November 6 in the capital of Massachusetts. The event, titled Walk for Nepal (WfN), is a campaign to engage Nepali living in the US and generate goodwill among them, says a statement issued by WfN. “It aims to tap the collective potential (net worth and network) of fast growing population of Nepalis in the US and throughout the world,” adds the statement.
Social organizations, including Friends of Maiti Nepal, Empower Dalit Women of Nepal, Help Nepal Network, Nyaya Health and Nepalese Children´s Education Foundation, are expected to mobilize more than 500 of their supporters and raise at least $20,000 in donations through the event, the statement said. Nepal ko Yuwa is also planning to organize more WfN events throughout the US and around the world.
Sita Rai wins two golds in America
KATHMANDU: Nepali national Sita Rai won two gold medals on Sunday in the Pan American International Taekwondo Championship held in Los Vegas, USA. Rai, the bronze medalist of World Championship and gold winner of SAFF, claimed gold medal each in pumse and breaking divisions.
Rai is currently working as a national coach in Portland, Oregon, USA. Rai represented the national team of Portland, Oregon, informed Diwakar Dan Maharjan, the chief master of the West Coast Taekwondo Association, Hollywood, in an e-mail. Rai, who participated in the 1992 Olympics had been imparting training at the US West Coast Taekwondo, Hollywood, since 2004.
