KATHMANDU: Teresa Academy defeated Anupam 23-3 in the junior boys´ category of the Second Deneb Inter-school Basketball Tournament Friday. Likewise, Innovative, Canvass and Kathmandu English School also won their respective matches. In the senior girls´ category, Deneb and Teresa emerged victorious.
Gyanodaya lifts title
KATHMANDU: Host Gyanodaya clinched the title of boys´ football during the 18th Eicher Gyan Carnival with a 1-0 win over Gyan Sikha on Friday. Narayan Silwal scored the decider for the host at its home ground in Khokana from the spot. Ganesh Gurung of Gyan Sikha was adjudged the best player. Altogether eight teams had participated in the tournament.
Mt Glory, Odessey in final
KATHMANDU: Mount Glory set up a title clash with Odessey in the Tenda AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the junior boys´ category on Friday. Mount Glory defeated Babylon 39-20 while Odessey had a narrow margin win over Greenland with the score of 21-22 to book their places in the final. In the senior girls´ category, Galaxy will lock horns with TIA in the final. Galaxy defeated Teresa 22-20 in the siemifnal match. Likewise, TIA edged past Gyanodaya 26-25 in another semifinal.
Chyasal beats Samajik
KATHMANDU: Chyasal Youth Club defeated Samajik Yuva Club 2-1 in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League on Friday. Shankar Bir Byanjankar provided lead to Chyasal in the 12th minute of the match played at the Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. However, Lal Bahadur Lawati levelled the score in the 38th minute. Prince Byanjankar scored the decider in the 69th minute for Chyasal. Meanwhile, the match between Boys Union Club and Gyan Bhairav Club ended in a goalless draw.
Thapa enters semis
KATHMANDU: Nepal´s veteran tennis player Kamal Thapa reached the semifinals of the 16th GVK-AISTA Senior Nationals 2011 in the singles section of above-55 age group on Friday. Thapa defeated Pushpa Raj of Karnataka 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. At one point, Thapa was 5-2 down in the first set but he fought back to 5-4 down and showed his resilience to win the set 7-5.
He then sealed the match with a comfortable 6-2 win in the second set. In the semifinals to be held on Saturday at the SAAP Tennis Complex of LB Stadium in Hyderabad, India, Thapa will meet the second seeded player Ram Mojan Roy of Tamil Nadu. In the doubles quarter finals held late Thursday, Kamal Thapa teamed up with K Radha Krishnamurti to defeat the tournament favorite duo of Yogesh Shah and Ram Babu 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Basketball tournament
KATHMANDU: Nepal Commerce Campus and friends of late Sachindra Shrestha will organize Sachindra Memorial Men´s Open Basketball Tournament from Sunday. Shrestha, the co-pilot of Tara Airlines, had lost his life in a plane crash on December 15 last year. The memorial tournament will feature eight teams from the valley. The teams will be placed in two pools for the tournament. Pool ´A´ features host NCC, Golden Gate. Premier and NASA, NCC G´sters, Morgan, Bhani Mandal and Bajra are placed in pool ´B´. The tournament will be played in league cum knockout format.
