SPORTS BRIEFS: Gurung off to England for trial

KATHMANDU: National football team striker Anil Gurung has left for England on Monday for trial at the Farnborough FC. The Hampshire based club is in Conference South after finishing top in Southern League Premier Division last season.



According to Gurung, he needs to attend the trial for at least two weeks. Sahara UK had initiated for his trial at the club. [break]



Gurung featured from Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) in the recently concluded domestic league after playing from the Shillong Lajong of India for two years. Gurung’s had a three month contract for MMC which has already expired. Before moving to Shillong Lajong, he had also give trial from Woking FC of England



NeBA organizes workshop

KATHMANDU
: Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) on Monday organized a workshop for journalists to inform them about the development of basketball in Nepal. The workshop was organized with the theme “3×3 Basketball: An opportunity; from streets to the Olympics.”



The workshop mainly focused on the development of 3X3 basketball tournaments. Nepali youth basketball team is heading for Italy to play the 3X3 Basketball World Championship for the first time in Nepal´s history. [break]



General Secretary of Nepal Olympic Committee Jeevan Ram Shrestha inaugurated the workshop.



Shrestha said that Nepali basketball has made a good progress in a short period referring to the youth girls´ team of Nepal that defeated Kuwait in the Asian Youth Games in Singapore and the senior men´s team that registered victory over Qatar in the Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.



“On the backdrop of these successes, we hope that Nepali basketball players will put up a good performance in the world championship,” said Shrestha.


C division football

KATHMANDU: Khalibari Football Club and Nawajyoti Youth Club emerged victorious on Monday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull C Division Football League being held at the Chyasal ground. Khalibari came from behind to register a 2-1 win over Gadura Sports Club. Subash Rai netted in the 62nd minute to cancel Gadura’s 56th minute lead after Anil Rai found the back on net. Anil Gurung hit the winner in the 76th minute. In another high scoring match, Nawajyoti eased past Satdobato Youth Club 7-3. Ranjan Bista netted twice for Nawajyoti while Shivakumar Khatri, Suraj Shrestha, Roshan Ranjit, Bijay Gurung and Sunil Malla got one apiece. Dhiraj Tamang netted all three goals for Satdobato.



National shooting begins Tuesday
KATHMANDU: The 17th Men and 16th Women National Shooting Tournament is all set to kick off Tuesday at the shooting range, Satdobato. Altogether 84 players, including one team each from the five development regions and two departmental teams -- Nepal Police and Nepal Army -- will compete in the event. Each team is set to field 12 players. The participants will vie for eight gold medals including men’s and women’s 10 meter air rifle and 10 meter air pistol. The top eight players of both men’s and women’s category will vie for the title. The final will be held on Monday.



Banshal starts with win
KATHMANDU: Sneha Banshal started her campaign with win in the women’s section of NSRA Open Squash Tournament on Monday. Banshal defeated Shrishti Maske 3-1 in the opening match played at the Satdobato Squash Academy. Meanwhile, defending champion Hira Bahadur Thapa and Rabi Jain won their respective matches in the men’s section of the tournament organized by Nepal Squash and Rackets Association and sponsored by Surya Nepal and CG Electronics. Thapa thrashed Lokendra Man Singh Bhandari 3-0. Earlier, Bhandari has defeated Amar Keshar Singh 3-2 in his first match of the tournament. Jain beat Sunil KC 3-1.


Kathmandu Valley sinks Bagmati
KATHMANDU: A brace from Manish Karki helped Kathmandu Valley Higher Secondary School register an impressive 3-1 win over Bagmati Mordern College during the NK Memorial Inter-college Football Tournament on Monday. Karki scored the first goal for Kathmandu Valley in the 22nd minute, but Ankit Dhungana beat the offside trap to equalize for Bagmati four minutes later. Suman Rai extended the lead of Kathmandu Valley 10 minutes into the second half while Karki sealed the match with another goal six minutes from time. In another match of the second day, NR College and Texas International College played a 1-1 draw. Texas drew the first blood through Nischal Mainali´s goal after the opponent´s keeper failed to clear the ball outside the penalty area. Dil Bahadur Gurung equalized for NR College with a superb free kick from 30 yards with virtually the last move of the first half. Defending champion Nobel Academy will face two times winner Shree Budhanilkantha in a mouth watering contest on Monday.
