KATHMANDU: Rupy´s International, The Excelsior, and host NIMS on Thursday won their respective matches and qualified for the quarterfinal in the boys´ category of the Third Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter School Basketball Tournament. NIMS thrashed Everest School 46-12 as Rajesh Shahi scored nine points. With 24 points from Prajwal Baidhya, Rupy´s defeated Ganesh 53-34. In the last match of boys´ category, The Excelsior outplayed Reed Model 39-22. Jeson Rana scored 10 points for the winning team. In girls´ section, defending champion NIMS, Ganesh and Reliance registered win. NIMS routed Celebration 31-6, Ganesh beat Bhrihaspati 10-2 and Reliance defeated Siddhartha Vanasthali 11-5.
Bajracharya, Shrestha share joint lead
KATHMANDU: Sudip Bajracharya and Shyam Sundar Shrestha share joint lead in the First National Amateur Chess Tournament after the end of fifth round on Thursday. Both Bajracharya and Shrestha have 4.5 points apiece. Dharam Bahadur Lama, Prakash Nepal and Umesh Sainju jointly occupy second position with four points each.
WMMC closer to super league
KATHMANDU: Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) of Makawanpur has inched closer to super league from group B on Thursday in the Red Bull Regional B Division league being held in Hetauda after it registered third victory in a row. Workers Martyrs saw off Sauvagya 2-1 with a decisive goal from Ganesh Shrestha in the 81st minute. Earlier, Dhak Bahadur Thapa had led Sauvagya ahead in the 22nd minute but Workers leveled the scoring in the 33rd minute through Mandip Singh.
Workers Martyrs has nine points from three matches. In another match, Sangam Youth Club of Kaski beat Bijay Sports Club of Kailali 3-1. Sangam has six points and Bijay three. In group A matches being held in Jhapa, Mitra Milan Club of Sunsari beat Sainik Youth Club of Jhapa 2-1 and Diamond Youth Club of Parsa played 1-1 draw against NFC Chitwan.
MYA held by Tusal
KATHMANDU: Madhyapur Youth Association´s (MYA) winning run came to an end on Thursday following a stoppage time goal as it was held to a 2-2 draw by Tusal Youth Club during the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League being held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. Bartaman Rai of Tusal hit the equalizer during the fourth minute of the stoppage time to cancel the 2-1 lead taken by MYA.
Earlier, MYA had opened scoring in the 10th minute through Bivek Pratap Malla but Nitesh Lama made it 1-1 with 36th minute goal. But Malla again restored lead of MYA in the third minute of stoppage time which was again cancelled by Rai a minute later. Despite the draw, MYA remained constant on the top spot with 10 points from four matches. Kathmandu Club beat Kumari Club 2-1 to secure second position with nine points. Saroj Sipai netted both the goals for Kathmandu Club. Sipai netted in the 30th and 35th minute. Ashis Thapa hit the consolation two minutes from time. Kumari has 2 points from four matches.
