KATHMANDU, Nov 20: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Friday inaugurated the three-day 8th Asian Spinal Cord Network (ASCoN) conference being held in the capital. The conference, which is being attended by doctors and victims from different 18 Asian countries, including Nepal, will end on Sunday.

Speaking at the function, President Yadav stressed on the need to rescue, treat and rehabilitate victims of spinal injury. “Rescue and transport of the injured is a difficult task in Nepal as is their surgery and rehabilitation,” President Yadav said, adding, “Even if services are available, it is often expensive and time-consuming.” He urged people to help victims of spinal injury cope with their problems. This is the second conference organized by Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Center (SIRC) time in Nepal.

Kanakmani Dixit, president of SIRC, stressed on the need for collaborative effort to develop a wheel-chair friendly neighborhood in Kathmandu. “We are starting off with making an alley in Lalitpur wheel-chair friendly,” Dixit informed.

Meanwhile, victims of spinal injury urged President Yadav to make all schools, colleges and public offices wheel-chair friendly.
