Barshaman Pun, in-charge of the Maoist military bureau, is newly appointed Minister for Peace and Reconstruction. Republica caught up with Pun at his office on Monday for a brief interview to find out how the present government will take the peace process forward. [break]

How will the government drive the peace process forward?

The coordinator of the Special Committee will be designated and the Special Committee will resume work within a week. A time-bound plan of action for integration and rehabilitation will be prepared to complete the peace process by May 28, the deadline to ready the new constitution. The action plan will be prepared with technical inputs from the secretariat under the Special Committee. There is no alternative to completing the integration.

How can the whole process be completed in the remaining short period?

We are confident that constitution drafting will be completed within the deadline. And if the constitution is ready, it will pave way for the completion of the peace process. The issues related to modality of integration and rehabilitation, norms for PLA integration and the number of PLA to be integrated will also be settled.

The issue of modality is almost settled. Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had floated four options for integration -- Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force or a separate force.

The main thing is trust among parties.

As you have been appointed a minister, will your party send another leader to the Special Committee in your place?

We haven´t decided anything yet.

Your party was not happy with the previous government for not giving any rehabilitation packages to the disqualified combatants. Will this government offer any packages to them now?

The ministry will take up this issue.

Months after tabling the bills on Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Disappearance, they are yet to be enacted. What will be your role regarding the bills?

The bills are with the statute committee of the parliament. They´ll be my priority.
