Special Committee to close 13 cantonments

KATHMANDU, Feb 29: A meeting of the Special Committee on Wednesday decided to close 13 satellite cantonments that housed former Maoist combatants within ten days in light of the recent release of 7,365 combatants who had opted for voluntary retirement.



According to Balananda Sharma, convener of the secretariat of the Special Committee, all the seven main cantonments and the satellite cantonments nearest to them. There are altogether 28 cantonments, with four satellite camps each under the seven main cantonments. [break]



"The secretariat will implement the decision of the Special Committee within ten days starting from Thursday," said Sharma.



The meeting of the Special Committee, convened a day after four members on the committee asked the prime minister to call its meeting, took the decision as per the recommendation of a panel formed on February 13.



According to a member of the Special Committee Minendra Rijal, the meeting also decided to put the arms used for the security of the to-be-closed cantonments in the containers at the main cantonments.



Similarly, the meeting also decided on the security arrangement for the properties inside the cantonments to be closed.



"Either the Nepal Army or the Armed Police Force, whichever has a base closest from the cantonments, will be asked to make security arrangement for the 13 cantonments," said Rijal.
