Talking to media persons after the meeting, Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimire, who is also the spokesperson for the committee, said the meeting was put off as it failed to meet the required quorum. “We did not hold a formal meeting. But we made a review of the progress made in monitoring the cantonments,” he said. [break]
Special Committee Coordinator Balananda Sharma had briefed the committee members present at the meeting about the field situation of the cantonments.
Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel and Dr Minendra Rijal from the Nepali Congress were present at the meeting. Both Maoist Special Committee members Barsha Man Pun and Janardan Sharma, however, did not show up.
The three major parties had earlier agreed to hold the committee meetings three times a week. The committee, however, has failed to meet regularly due to differing positions of parties on key issues.
On Wednesday, Special Committee member from the UCPN (Maoist) Janardan Sharma said the committee meetings have failed to take any concrete decision due to “interference” from top leadership of his party.
Party leaders said the committee would make headway only if the Maoist central committee meeting scheduled for Friday takes a formal decision to expedite the peace process.
Though the parties initially agreed to accomplish the tasks of handing over Maoist arms to the government and integrating and rehabilitating the combatants by August 27, they have already failed to work as per the calendar.
